JOHANN VAN DER HAGEN (1675–1745) An English Man O' War with other shipping, a storm approaching.
Oil on canvas.
PROVENANCE: (George) Nicholas Le Gendre Horton-Fawkes; Farnley Hall, Otley, West Yorkshire.
NOTES: This painting was clearly influenced by the work of Willem van de Velde II, (cf. A Small Dutch Vessel close-hauled in a Strong Breeze by Willem van de Velde II, at the National Gallery). Van der Hagen was thought to have been a student of Willem van de Velde The Younger, and was linked to him by the marriage of his daughter to van de Velde’s son Cornelis.
